Volunteer Job Descriptions

The following is a brief description of the volunteer jobs that need to be filled for each meet. If you are new to the swim team, the jobs of lane timer, runner, set up, take down, and concessions are good places to start out volunteering. Being a lane timer or runner provides you with the best view of the pool and the swimmers during their races.

HOME MEETS

Pool Area Set Up Consists of one shift, less than 2 hours in duration (5:00am - 6:00am). Duties include preparing the pool for the meet, including stacking and moving lounge chairs, moving tables, roping off areas, setting up the sound system, hanging backstroke flags, setting lane ropes, hanging banners, team tent setup, and general assembly of the pool deck area. Note: this is a physical job and may require lifting 25 lbs.

Concessions Consists of three shifts; 1st shift = set up 5:00am - 7:00am; 2nd shift = 7:00am - 9:30am; 3rd shift = 9:30am - meet completion. Duties include setting up the concession area (unload the shed, set up tables, prepare hot beverages, and prepare for opening), interacting with adults and children, preparing and delivering food, handling money, and keeping the concession area clean.

Data Entry Consists of two shifts, each about 2.5 hours in duration (1st shift = events 1 - 48; 2nd shift = event 49 - entry completion). Duties include working with one other timer (from the away team) for a specific lane, operating a stop watch, and accurately conveying the time to the 'book keeper' for documentation. Note: this job requires standing near the lane blocks and getting splashed for the duration of the shift.

Heating Consists of two shifts, each about 2.5 hours in duration (1st shift = events 1 - 48; 2nd shift = event 49 - meet completion). Duties include organizing swimmers for the appropriate event, heat, and lane, and informing the coaches if a swimmer is not in heating. Job requirements: patience and a loud voice. There is someone responsible for heating who will explain the duties in detail!

Ribbons Consists of one shift, about 2-3 hours in duration. Duties include affixing labels to appropriate ribbons and filing ribbons in the team receptacle. Note: this job is done indoors and requires sitting. Ribbons will be done on the Monday following the meet.

Official Consists of two shifts, each about 2.5 hours in duration (1st shift = events 1 - 48; 2nd shift = event 49 - meet completion). Officials evaluate starts, turns, and strokes to ensure they are done appropriately and disqualify swimmers if they are not done correctly. Note: This job requires prior training. If you are interested in becoming an official, contact Mark Schild (303) 921-7336.

Pool Area Take Down Consists of one shift, less than 1 hour in duration (after meet ends).
